How Much Does Colorbond Roofing Cost?

Colorbond® roofing has become one of Australia’s most popular roofing materials thanks to its durability, modern appearance, and ability to withstand harsh weather conditions. Whether you’re building a new home or replacing an old roof, investing in Colorbond roofing can add long-term value and protection to your property.

But one question homeowners commonly ask is: How much does Colorbond roofing cost in Australia in 2026?

The answer depends on several factors, including the type of Colorbond product, roof size, labour costs, and the complexity of the installation. In this guide, we’ll break down the average costs, explain what affects pricing, and help you determine whether Colorbond roofing is the right investment for your home.

What Is Colorbond® Roofing?

Colorbond® is a premium pre-painted steel roofing material manufactured by BlueScope and specifically designed for Australian conditions. It is engineered to resist:

  • Intense UV exposure
  • Heavy rain and storms
  • Corrosion and rust
  • Bushfire conditions
  • Extreme temperatures

Colorbond roofing is available in a wide range of colours and profiles, making it suitable for modern, traditional, and coastal homes across Australia.

Average Colorbond Roofing Cost in Australia

The average installed cost of Colorbond roofing in Australia generally ranges between:

  • $53 and $97 per square metre installed

These figures include both materials and professional installation.

Depending on roof complexity and premium product selection, installation costs can also reach:

  • $80 to $150 per square metre installed for more complex projects.

Most Australian homeowners spend approximately:

  • $15,000 to $25,000 for a complete Colorbond roof replacement. Larger or more complex projects can exceed $30,000.

Colorbond Roofing Material Costs

Material prices vary depending on the type of Colorbond product selected.

Approximate material-only costs include:

Type of Colorbond Roofing Material Cost
Basic corrugated steel $18 per m²
Powder-coated Colorbond $22 per m²
Double-sided Colorbond $24 per m²
Colorbond Ultra® $37–$38 per m²

These figures cover roofing sheets only and do not include labour or installation costs.

Colorbond Roofing Costs by Home Size

The total cost of a Colorbond roof depends largely on the size of your property.

Small Home (100 m² Roof)

Approximate cost:

  • $5,000 – $10,000

Medium Home (150–200 m² Roof)

Approximate cost:

  • $10,000 – $20,000

Large Home (250–400 m² Roof)

Approximate cost:

  • $18,000 – $30,000+

These estimates vary based on roof design, accessibility, and additional work required during installation.

What Factors Affect Colorbond Roofing Costs?

Several important factors influence the final installation price.

1. Roof Size

Larger roofs require:

  • More materials
  • More labour
  • Longer installation times

Because roofing contractors generally charge by square metre, bigger roofs naturally cost more.

2. Roof Pitch and Complexity

Roofs with:

  • Steep slopes
  • Multiple levels
  • Skylights
  • Chimneys
  • Valleys and ridges

…are more labour-intensive and usually cost more to install. Complex roof designs often require additional safety equipment and longer installation times.

3. Type of Colorbond Product

Different Colorbond products have different price points.

Standard Colorbond®

Suitable for most residential properties and offers excellent durability.

Colorbond Ultra®

Designed for coastal areas and highly corrosive environments.

Double-Sided Colorbond®

Often used for patios, pergolas, and exposed structures.

Premium products naturally cost more but may offer longer-lasting performance in demanding environments.

4. Existing Roof Removal

If you’re replacing an old roof, additional costs may include:

  • Roof removal
  • Waste disposal
  • Structural repairs
  • Asbestos removal

Asbestos removal, in particular, can significantly increase project costs because of strict safety requirements.

5. Labour Costs

Roofing labour costs vary depending on location and project complexity.

Typical labour costs include:

  • $40–$60 per m²
  • $50–$80 per hour

Major cities generally have higher labour rates than regional areas.

6. Additional Roofing Upgrades

Many homeowners choose to install additional features such as:

  • New gutters and downpipes
  • Sarking and insulation
  • Roof ventilation systems
  • Flashings and ridge caps

While these upgrades increase the upfront cost, they often improve roof performance and energy efficiency.

Why Is Colorbond Roofing So Popular?

Colorbond has become one of Australia’s preferred roofing materials for several reasons.

Exceptional Durability

Colorbond steel is extensively tested to perform in Australia’s harsh climate conditions and can last for decades with proper maintenance.

Lightweight Construction

Compared with concrete and terracotta tiles, Colorbond is significantly lighter.

This can:

  • Reduce structural requirements
  • Lower installation costs
  • Simplify reroofing projects

Energy Efficiency

Many Colorbond colours are designed to reflect solar heat.

This can help:

  • Reduce cooling costs
  • Improve indoor comfort
  • Lower energy consumption

Unlike tiled roofs, Colorbond requires minimal ongoing maintenance.

Routine inspections and occasional cleaning are usually enough to keep it performing at its best.

Modern Appearance

Colorbond is available in numerous colours and profiles, making it suitable for:

  • Contemporary homes
  • Heritage renovations
  • Coastal properties
  • Investment homes

Its clean and modern appearance is one of the reasons it continues to grow in popularity throughout Australia.

Is Colorbond Better Than Roof Tiles?

Both materials have advantages.

Colorbond Roofing

Pros:

  • Lightweight
  • Low maintenance
  • Modern appearance
  • Faster installation
  • Excellent weather resistance

Concrete and Terracotta Tiles

However, many Australian homeowners prefer Colorbond because it offers a combination of longevity, low maintenance, and excellent value for money.

How to Save Money on Colorbond Roofing

Here are some practical ways to reduce costs:

  • Obtain multiple quotes from licensed roofing contractors
  • Choose standard Colorbond products where appropriate
  • Replace your roof before structural damage worsens
  • Schedule work during quieter seasons
  • Invest in quality workmanship to avoid future repair expenses

A well-installed Colorbond roof can provide decades of reliable performance and often proves more economical over its lifetime.

Although the upfront cost may be higher than some alternatives, Colorbond offers:

  • Long lifespan

I WANT TO INSTALL SOLAR PANELS WHATS THE BEST PROCESS TO HAVE MY ROOF FIXED BEFORE SOLAR IS INSTALLED?

The best process to do this is to have your roof high pressure washed first. After this is done contact
your solar company and ask them to install rails and wiring. When this is finished, we will fully restore
the roof and leave you with spare coated tiles and touch up paint. The solar company final task to
connect the panels to the railing.

MY ROOF HAS SOLAR PANELS ON THEM. CAN MY ROOF STILL BE RESTORED?

Yes, he majority of roof we restore now days do have solar panels. We high pressure the roof and
rinse all panels. When it’s time for painting we cover all panels with a plastic film and paint underneath
the panels, so all visible tiles are coated with primer and colour.

MY ROOFTILES ARE PORUOUS HOW CAN WE ACHIEVE A GOOD PAINT FINISH?

If your tiles are porous this means that they are retaining water which adds significant weight to your
roof and roofing timbers, leading to potential leaks and structural issues. To prevent this we apply a
maxi build primer to the rooftiles when painting. This Ensures that the tiles are coated very thick. All
cracks and rough surfaces on the tiles are filled in turn giving the finish much more appealing and
bolder.

WHY DO MY SOLAR PANNELS NEED REGULAR CLEANING?

All solar panels rely on a clean surface to be able to work to their optimum capacity. When the surface
gets dirty it restricts the panels’ ability to capture sunlight efficiently and will therefore not produce as
much electricity. Regular cleaning is not only advised for productivity of the panel but also in most
cases to adhere to warranty requirements Aswell.
